Peter Leslie Doohan of Nelson Bay, Australia (formerly of Fort Smith, Ark.) passed away July 21st, 2017 at the age of 56 of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). A distinguished tennis professional, Doohan played and taught tennis throughout his life. Collegiate accomplishments included NCAA Champion (doubles 1982), All-American and All-Southwest Conference while playing for the University of Arkansas. Professional accomplishments include, the huge upset at Wimbledon in 1987, beating then #1 ranked Boris Becker, one ATP singles title, five ATP doubles titles and reaching world rankings of 43rd (singles) and 15th (doubles). Following his professional career, Peter coached tennis in the United States and Australia. Doohan was born May 2, 1961 in Newcastle, Australia. He is survived by his mother, Thelma and two sisters Cathie and Margaret (all of Australia); as well as two sons, John Doohan and wife Abby of Fayetteville, Ark., and Hunter Doohan of Los Angeles, Calif. A celebration of life visitation for family and friends will take place on Saturday, August 19h from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. in Fort Smith, Ark. at 4 Windhaven Drive.
