"Two of the most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." Mark Twain. Katherine Dalton Grant, born July 7, 1939 in Westport, Connecticut to Katherine Dexter Dalton Hitch and Joseph Delano Hitch Jr. Katherine attended local schools before matriculating at Mary C. Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island and at Centenary College for Women in Hackettstown, New Jersey, where she majored in Fine Arts. Katherine's parents and her three older siblings lived in Japan for 11 years before World War II. The births of Katherine and a younger brother after the family's return to the States completed the clan. She is the dedicated mother of two sons, Thomas Samuels Grant III ("Trey") of Greeley, Colorado and Phillip Lair Grant, of Round Rock, Texas. Her professional life included Realtor*, photographer, retail store ownership, fine arts gallery manager and residential loan officer in a Houston bank. Katherine won national awards for her fine needlework, perfecting her skills through training with the Embroiderers Guild of America, as well as serving on the Board of Directors. She enjoyed tennis, sailing, gardening—particularly designing gardens for optimum viewing from the interior of her home. She created this beauty in homes from New York and New Jersey to Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Rio de Janeiro and her home in Bella Vista. She dared to learn to ski the Black Diamond slopes in Colorado and handle the ice without fear. Her motto, "Take the cakes while they're passing.' Was exemplified in the way she lived her life. Among the "cakes" Katherine enjoyed were volunteering as a counselor for Crisis Hotline in Houston and training others to do so, as well, serving as a volunteer for the Listen to Children program of the Dade County school system in Florida, and coordinating programs, writing curriculum and managing the volunteer teams for RSVP, Response Support for Valuable People, an outreach arm of the Compassion Ministry of Galveston-Houston, Texas. She enjoyed teaching, public speaking, creating beauty in many forms and learning more about the wide array of topics her curiosity was intrigued by. Being featured on a 2016 episode of Antiques Roadshow with a family heirloom was perhaps the icing on the cake for Katherine. Her love for animals is found in her belief that she will reunite with her dear rescue dog, "Tigger", across the Rainbow Bridge. She leaves behind her four-legged companion Robin, and a Myriad of good friends from all around the world. She wishes to share with the nurses and treatment staff at Highland Oncology Group her sincere gratitude for their tender care during her illness. The words of Maya Angelou resonated with Katie: "I've learned that people will forget what you said— People will forget what you did— But people will never forget how you made them feel." Katherine Dalton Grant helped us learn to enjoy life to its fullest. She passed on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Circle of Life Legacy Village in Bentonville, Arkansas. A celebration of life will be held at Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel, 504 Memorial Dr., Bella Vista, Ark. 72714 at a later date. Attendees may choose to bring a flower to the celebration which may be set afloat on Lake Norwood at the conclusion of the gathering.
