Layton Porter

After a long, fulfilled, and joyful life, Layton Porter, aged 92, passed away on March 6, 2016, at Walnut Grove Nursing Home. He was born February 20, 1924 at Boston, Arkansas, the son of Beecher and Tressie Lane Porter and played many roles during his long lifetime. Among the most important roles were those of Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather. He was married to his devoted wife, Velma Maggard Porter, for almost 69 years. He was the loving father of five children: Janis Porter Griggs, Springdale; Glenda Porter Neidecker (and husband Brad), Houston, Texas; David Porter, deceased; Samuel Porter, Springdale; Edward Porter (and wife Rhonda), Springdale; brother of Lloyd Porter of Paris, Arkansas, Leslie Porter of Springdale, Beecher Porter of Little Rock, Leon Porter of Kennewick, Washington. And, he was very proud of his 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He had the honor of serving his country as Corporal of the 536th Amphibious Track Battalion in the South Pacific during WWII. He was a master brick mason who worked in Northwest Arkansas for over 40 years and was known for his precise and creative work with both brick and native stone. He was an ordained minister who, in addition to giving sermons, performed numerous baptisms and burials. Notably, he officiated at the ceremony of his younger daughter's wedding. Layton Porter was a gregarious man who made friends easily. He loved life but was not afraid of death. And now, he is with his Heavenly Father forever. Funeral services will be held at 2;00 P.M. Thursday in the chapel of Brashears Funeral Home wwwbrashearsfuneralhome.net with The Reverend Loren Collins officiating. Interment will be in the Venus Cemetery. Visitation 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Wednesday at Brashears.
