Hughes W. Painter, 88, of Rogers, Ark., died on Sept. 24, 2013, in his home. He was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Old Fort, N.C., to Charlie W. and Eve Leigh Murphy Painter. He was a retired, 20-year veteran of the U.S. Army and a master mechanic. He was a member of the Green Springs Baptist Church in Hope Mills, N.C., a loving husband and doting grandfather, who loved gardening, woodworking and crafting. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Martha C. Marlow Painter of Rogers; two daughters, Syble Freligh of Vernon, Conn., and Carolyn Plummer of Rogers; two sons, Hughes Walter Painter Jr. of Van Buren and Randall Painter of Rogers; one sister, Vivian Holder of Spring Lake, N.C.; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the U.S National Cemetery in Fort Smith, with full military honors all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Danny Plummer, Ed Freligh, Brad Plummer, Scott Painter, Brett Painter and Grant Painter.
