Herbert Alfred Matthews, age 84, of Fayetteville, formerly of Pine Bluff, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at the Willard Walker Hospice home in Fayetteville. Mr. Matthews was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Star City, Ark., the son of the late Victor and Anna Carrington Matthews. Mr. Matthews was reared and received his early education in Star City, graduating from Star City High School. Upon graduating from high school, he entered the U. S. Army and served in the Korean War. He was a member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. He worked for the Viking Bag Company in their Shur Fine Division for many years, retiring in 1993. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his wife in 2000, Elaine Robertson Matthews, whom he married Nov. 30, 1949, at Monroe, Ga. He is survived by a daughter, Melba Shillings (Dale) of Springdale; niece, Bonnie White of North Little Rock; grandson, Mason Shillings (Brittany) of Fayetteville; granddaughter, Anna Shillings of Springdale; a great-granddaughter and three step great-grandsons. Graveside services will be Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at 1 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery by Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Directors with Reverend Lewis Hinkle officiating.
