Barbara Eugenia Jolley Ashbaugh

Barbara Eugenia Jolley Ashbaugh, 75, of Winslow, Ark., passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2013. She was born Dec. 2, 1937, in Montgomery, Ala., to John Henry Jolley and Maurine Ruff Jolley, and lived with her family in Downs and Shorter, Ala. Barbara spent her early years working as a medical receptionist and a Delta Airlines stewardess. She moved to Winslow in 1971 and soon declared it her home for good. She worked as an apartment manager and in many capacities for the City of Winslow, including the post office, library and lastly, city hall, and retired this summer after over 20 years of service. She was a dedicated Winslow volunteer for the Winslow Health Center, WCDC, Cub Scouts, Friends of the Library, Winfest, Community Meals, City Council, Winslow Recycling, Ozark Folkways, Home Extension, United Methodist Church and more. Barbara took over the title of Winslow historian from her mentor, Robert Winn, and gladly devoted her time, energy and love to preserving its rich history. She spent years learning and teaching this history to others, with the culmination of her efforts resulting in the creation of the Winslow Museum in 2007. She loved helping others, meeting new people and learning about their history, bird watching, singing, reading and doing the camel walk. She is survived by her brother, John Henry Jolley of Shorter, Ala.; one son, John Marc Ashbaugh of Winslow, Ark.; two daughters, Ruth Ashbaugh Covin of Flower Mound, Texas, and Elizabeth Jolley Ashbaugh of Fayetteville, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Winslow United Methodist Church, with a gathering to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Winslow Museum, 108 Winslow Blvd., Winslow, AR 72959.
