Bonnie Barkley Box

Bonnie Barkley Box, 87, of Rogers, Ark., died on March 18, 2013, at Ashley Health and Rehabilitation Center in Rogers, Ark. She was born Oct. 10, 1925, in Collinsville, Ala., to Florence Bachelor Barkley and Luther Kennon Barkley. She spent her childhood in Collinsville, Ala. After finishing high school, Bonnie went to Washington D.C., to work at the Pentagon during World War II. She and her childhood sweetheart, Bill Box, married Jan. 20, 1946. They returned to Alabama to live in Tuscaloosa, where Bill went to the University of Alabama and Bonnie worked at the Alabama Unemployment Office. After college, they eventually moved to Birmingham, Ala., where they raised their two daughters, Dixie and Bow. Bonnie worked at the Social Security Office. Bonnie loved gardening, traveling, photographing landscapes and writing poetry. She became a flower show judge who participated in flower shows all over Alabama. Bonnie wrote poetry most of her life and always had a poem to celebrate important events in her life and her family's and friend's lives. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, William Edward Box; granddaughter, Sonja Swenson Welch; grandson, James Brett Culp; sister, Thelma Meadows; her brothers, Uylus and Luther Barkley; her parents, Florence and Kennon Barkley. Bonnie is survived by two daughters, Dixie Box Culp (James H. Culp) and Bowilla Box Walker (Donnie P. Walker); three grandchildren, Bart Culp (Renee), Andy Walker and Greig Walker (Melinda); six great-grandchildren, James Culp, Casey Culp, Jordan Culp, David Stine, Bradley Walker and Andrew Walker; three great-great-grandchildren, Jaymes Culp, David and Kylie Stine; a sister, Carolyn Samples; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Collinsville Funeral Home in Collinsville, Ala., on Saturday, March 23, 2013. Visitation will be at 10 a.m., services at 11 a.m. and interment at Collinsville Cemetery. Local arrangements are with Benton County Memorial Park Funeral Home, 3800 W. Walnut, Rogers.
