Ernest Cleo Mehlhorn Jr. of Bella Vista, Ark., passed peacefully on June 18, 2013, with his wife of 58 years, Louise Lashley Mehlhorn, by his side. Ernie was born in Tulsa, Okla., on Nov. 29, 1930, to Ernest Sr. and Margaret Agnes (Wood) Mehlhorn, who have both preceded him in death, as well as his brother, Dale. Surviving Ernie is his wife, Louise; daughters, Janet McManus and her husband, Wayne, of Oklahoma, and Karen Mehlhorn of Washington; sons, Ken Mehlhorn and his wife, Melia, of California, Eric Mehlhorn of Louisiana and Jeff Mehlhorn of Alabama. He is also survived by his sister, Judith Ann Mehlhorn of Oklahoma; six granddaughters; and one great-grandson. After graduating from Tulsa University, Ernie chose Boy Scouts as a career. He met Louise at a Boy and Girl Scout meeting. He worked his way up through the ranks of professional scouting in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. He also sponsored Boy Scouts in Munich, Germany, for three years. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, coin and stamp collecting, and woodworking. He has made beautiful wood display cases, including several for his Hallmark train engine collection. Ernie was a pillar of strength and the rock of his large clan. He was a kind, gentle, wise and faithful man who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 29, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the 1st United Methodist Church. The church is located at 20 Boyce Drive, Bella Vista, Ark. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Ernest C. Mehlhorn Jr. to the Boy Scouts of America or a charity of your choice.
