Mary Louise Hughes

Mary Louise "Dood" Henry Hughes, age 90, passed away July 16, 2013, in Fayetteville, Ark. She was born on Dec. 27, 1922, in Russellville, Ark., to Clarence C. Henry and Nola Huey Henry. She attended Russellville Public Schools and Arkansas Tech. At the age of 5, she met the love of her life, Claude A. "Al" Hughes, Jr., and they married on June 5, 1943. With that marriage came the commitment of a Military Wife. They moved all over the United States and she kept the home fires burning for her husband during many remote tours, war and conflicts. Military life was not always easy, but she met each day with a positive attitude and knew that all things had to be done in a certain order. She made each move a new adventure and a thrill to see and do new things. During all of these years, she had the chance to see things she never imagined and meet people that we only read about. Her finest moment was being the only woman at dinner and the head table, sitting next to General Park, the man who was to become President of Korea. After "they" retired, home was in Fayetteville, Ark., where her husband was born. She helped Al start a business in real estate and was delivering multi-lists to everyone from Bella Vista to Fayetteville on every one of those cold icy mornings. She was a wealth of knowledge and a great "go to" person if you needed information. She had a great sense of humor and could make most everyone laugh at the drop of a hat. She was always ready to listen to everyone's trials and troubles and this was a great asset when her husband became a commander in the Air Force. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years; and her sister, Lora Elizabeth Henry Rogers. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Beth Hughes of Fayetteville. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday July 26, 2013, at Oakland Cemetery in Russellville, Ark., under the direction of Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Lions World Services for the Blind, 2811 Fair Park Blvd., Little Rock, AR 72204.
