John R. Lipe

Master Sergeant John R. Lipe, U. S. Marine Corps, age 67, of Bella Vista, Ark., the son of Richard and Ann Lipe retired from active duty April 30, 1985, from the Marine Corps. He passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Concordia Care Center in Bella Vista surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 13, 1946, in Long Beach, Calif. Lipe was selected from a number of candidates to assume the duties as the Signals Intelligence/Electronics Warfare Operations Chief for the U. S. Marines in the Pacific. After graduation from Van Buren in 1964, Lipe enlisted in the Marines and was sent to boot camp in San Diego, Calif. In 1965, he was chosen to attend the U.S. Navel Prep Academy Prep School in Maryland. He also attended German Language School's Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif. In 1967, Manual Morse Operator School in Pensacola, Fla., in 1967 he received a AS Degree from Electronic Engineering Technology in Pensacola Junior College in 1970-1972, Cryptologic Supervisions Course with National Security Agency in Washington in 1975, Cryptologic Analysis School in San Angelo, Texas, in 1979, and Defense Intelligence College in Washington in 1980-1981. In 1968, Lipe transferred to Bremerhaven, West Germany to work for the Naval Security Group Activity as a cryptologic linguist. In 1969 he married Greta Hartmann, a native German and floral designer she now lives in Bella Vista. They have two sons, Olaf Bernie Lipe, of Nalehu, Hawaii, and John Lipe Jr., of Rogers, he had eight brothers; Rick Lipe and his wife Darlene, of Van Buren, Robert H. Lipe and his wife Janice, of Cedarville, Bill Lipe and his wife Becky, of Van Buren, Dave Lipe, of Aspen, Colorado, Greg J. Lipe, of Rogers, Richard Lipe, of Arkansas, Dana Lipe, of Arkansas, Kevin M. Lipe, of Van Buren, four sisters; Donna Arnette, of Atlanta, Georgia, Anne Marie, of Van Buren, Kay Loni Bordelon and her husband Bob, of Alma, and Kari Ann Short, of Van Buren. Upon retirement from the Marine Corps he planned to return to the Fayetteville, Ark., area and complete some upper graduate level work at the University of Arkansas. Visitation: Sunday, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Epting Funeral Home in Bentonville. Graveside service: Monday, at 10 a.m. at National Cemetery of Fayetteville.
