Miki Marsha Heyne

Miki "Marsha" Heyne went to be with her Lord on Dec. 4, 2013, in Blue Springs, Mo. Miki, the child of Millie and Walt Heyne, was born in St. Louis, Mo., on Nov. 28, 1957. Miki graduated from Rogers High School in 1976, where she was the marching band drum major for four years. She graduated from Southwest Missouri State University with a B.S. In education and from the University of Missouri with an M.A. In reading education. She was a dedicated teacher in the Blue Springs (Mo.) School System, where she taught for 30 years. Miki was named Missouri Teacher of the Year in 1993. She also served as an adjunct professor of education at Graceland University's Independence, Mo., campus, where she mentored both aspiring students and those supervising teachers with whom they worked. In 1982, she married Wallie Winholtz, the love of her life. Wallie was a fellow teacher in the Blue Springs School system. They retired in 2010 after teaching for 30 years. Miki and Wallie were ardent canoeists, kayakers, campers, hikers, bikers and skiers. She had her own Harley and she and Wallie traveled extensively by bike. Miki was an animal lover who always had two dogs, and usually, a cat or two. Miki is survived by her husband, Wallie Winholtz; her parents, Millie and Walt Heyne of Rogers, Ark.; her sister and brother-in-law, Gail and Rik Hafer of Kirkwood, Mo.; her brother and sister-in-law, Marty and Kathleen Heyne of Charleston, S.C.; three nieces, Caitlin Hafer, Callie Heyne and Grace Heyne; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Lynn and John Varvaro, Alice and David Tribble of Lee Summit, Willie Winholtz of Kansas City and Betty Winholtz of California. A celebration of Miki's life will be held on Dec. 21 in the community room of the Blue Springs High School, 2000 N.W. Ashton St., Blue Springs, Mo., at 1 p.m. Her uncle, the Rev. David Ludwig, will officiate. Memorials may be given to the donor's preferred charity; Miki's was animal shelters.
