Oscar E. Hughes, 94, of Winslow, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, in Fayetteville. He was born Aug. 21, 1917, in Winslow, Ark., the son of Wythe Alvin and Marybelle Watkins Hughes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Hughes; his parents; three brothers, Ted, Eugene and Homer Hughes; and a son, Earl Hughes. He was a gentle, kind man who loved his wife, children, and grandchildren dearly. He loved seeing everyone in his home and was always joking and having a wonderful time. He had a great sense of humor. In his younger days, he loved to fish, hunt and play baseball. He loved the outdoors. He held many jobs in his lifetime. He was a very hard worker and so strong. He instilled his work ethic and the importance of education in his children and grandchildren. He worked in construction, raised chickens and cattle and raised a truck patch. He so enjoyed going to Farmers Market on the Fayetteville Square for over 30 years selling watermelons, strawberries, tomatoes, etc. He was always sought after because people knew his produce was the best. He was a lifelong member of Black Oak Church of Christ. He will certainly be missed by his family—there is a void in our hearts. The family would like to thank City Hospital nursing facility for caring for him. We especially thank Toby, Jeannie, Suzanne, Heather, Wendy and Jill for treating him with respect and love. He is survived by three daughters, Donna Dennis and her husband Dwayne of Winslow, Lynn Stout and her husband Benny of Winslow and Sandra Leggett and her husband Roy of Osage, Iowa; a son, Larry Paul Hughes and his wife Cathy of Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, Vernon Hughes and his wife Virginia of Winslow and Ray Hughes and his wife Billie Sue of Winslow; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today, March 2, at Moore's Chapel. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at Black Oak Church of Christ with burial to follow in Black Oak Cemetery, under the direction of Moore's Chapel.
