Hunters have big fun going after small game when the Big Squirrel Challenge rolls around each January.

It's a statewide contest hosted by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to see who can bag the heaviest limit of three squirrels. The daily limit is 12 squirrels, but individuals and teams may weigh only three.

This year's contest took place in snow and bitter cold on Jan. 12-13. Hunting was from noon on Jan. 12 to noon on Jan. 13. Squirrels were weighed at 12 Game and Fish field offices and nature centers around the state, including indoors at the J.B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Ozark Highlands Nature Center in Springdale. Weights were tallied in grams for the most precise results.
