Walmart Inc. next week will offer a new prepaid mobile service called MobileX that starts at $4.08 a month.

MobileX said in a news release that it had signed a multi-year, exclusive agreement with Walmart.

Beginning Tuesday, the mobile plan will be available at walmart.mymobilex.com and in some Walmart stores nationwide. A SIM card starter kit, which doesn’t include airtime, will cost $9.88.

The plans can be customized to meet the user’s needs, the MobileX release said.

MobileX is an appbased service that uses artificial intelligence to monitor usage and let customers know if a plan change will save them money.

“Having a mobile phone is next to an essential need in today’s world, yet the cost for individuals and families can be a large burden on their monthly budget,” said Mehrdad Akbar, vice president of merchandising, wireless, for Walmart U.S.

“Coupled with the fact that most mobile phone options are a one-size-fits-all approach, our customers end up paying for things they don’t use,” Akbar said.
