Club news featuring Marines, Democrats, orchid growers

Marines

The Marine Corps League Northwest Arkansas Detachment No. 854 monthly meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Center for Nonprofits at St. Mary's, 1200 W. Walnut St. in Rogers. All current and former members and former Marines and Fleet Marine Force corpsmen interested in learning more about the detachment are welcome to attend.

Democrats

Northwest Arkansas Senior Democrats will meet at noon Aug. 16 in the Walker Community Room at the Fayetteville Public Library. The speaker will be Stephannie Lane Baker, who is the executive director of Emerge Arkansas. Emerge Arkansas recruits, trains and provides a powerful network for Democratic Women who want to run for office. The meeting will also be available via Zoom.

Computers

The Bella Vista Computer Club has the following August clinics and classes coming up: Basic Computer Knowledge: What is a Computer? by Joel Ewing, 9-11 a.m. Aug. 18; and Computer Security for Regular People, Part 1, by Justin Sell, 4-6 p.m. Aug. 24.

New members and visitors are welcome to the general meetings.

Orchids

The Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. The speaker will be Alan Koch, who owns and operates Gold Country Orchids in Lincoln, Calif., where he specializes in miniature and compact Cattleyas.

He is recognized as an expert in the Brazilian Cattleya alliance and a trend setter in miniature Cattleya breeding. Koch has been published in the Orchid Digest, the American Orchid Society magazine, as well as many International Publications. He has also been published in several proceedings of the World Orchid Conference. He is an internationally known speaker. Koch's visits are always educational and fun, and he will have plants for sale. Guests are welcome.

Genealogists

The Northwest Arkansas Genealogical Society (NAGS) will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 22, at the Bentonville Public Library at 405 S. Main St. Marcia Conners, who has researched for more than 40 years and taught classes for 15 years, will speak on "Where to Look When the Courthouse Burned." Although more challenging, she will explain what other records and sources are available for genealogical information. The public is welcome.

Hikers

The Ozark Hill Hikers, affiliated with the American Volkssport Association, invite all interested walkers to join them for a walk Aug. 24 in Fayetteville. Registration is from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at Walgreens, 4007 N. Shiloh Drive in Fayetteville. There is a fee of $3 for credit and $2 for noncredit. There is a short drive to the start point (Lake Fayetteville) where participants will choose either a 5K or 10K walk. Membership dues to the Ozark Hill Hikers are $12 a year prorated $1 for each month remaining in the calendar year.

Gardeners

The next meeting of the Benton County Master Gardeners will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 6 with a social hour at 5:30. The topic is the migration of Monarch butterflies. Meetings are open to the public and take place at the Bentonville Church of Christ at 816 N.W. Eighth St. in Bentonville.

Master Gardeners are volunteers who are trained in horticulture and share their training by participating in community projects.

Andante

Andante Music Club of Bella Vista announces a performance by Shaina Martinez, mezzo soprano. She is the winner, Women's Voice, of the National Federation of Music Club's 2021 Young Artist Competition. The concert will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 in the Chapel at Central United Methodist Church, 2535 W. New Hope Road in Rogers. Mary Scott Smith will accompany Martinez.

This program is also a memorial in loving memory of Mary Shambarger, sponsored by her daughter Susan Shambarger Goss and son-in-law Dr. Stephen L. Goss. A reception follows the program. The program is free and open to the public.

Bowling

The Bella Vista Fall Bowling League is looking for senior ladies to join them. There are openings for full-time bowlers and substitutions. The league bowls on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 p.m. in Rogers.

Fly Tyers

The Bella Vista Fly Tyers Club is changing its meeting location. The club will meet in the lower level of the United Lutheran Church at the corner of Forest Hills Boulevard and Cooper Road in Bella Vista. Meetings will continue to be held on Thursdays, with a social period beginning at 9 a.m. followed by the regular meeting at 10 a.m.

Access to the meeting room is through the main doors of the church building.
