Local Notes: Writers' Colony offers fellowship

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Arkansas announces the following classes for the upcoming week:

• May 18: "OLLI for Coffee" (Zoom), free and open to all, contact office for Zoom details.

• May 24: "Beginner/Novice Bird Walk II" (in person). Join OLLI on a wonderfully peaceful spring morning walk with the birds singing you along. This walk will allow students to see and listen to the local birds in the Fayetteville area. The habitat will be the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. $25 members, $40 nonmembers.

• May 27: "Right Brain Photography" (online), $55 members, $70 nonmembers.

• June 1: "Take a Walk on the Wild Side -- In Russia" (online), $25 members/$40 nonmembers.

• June 7: " Our Own Sweet Sounds" (in person), $29 members, $44 nonmembers.

• June 8: "Inside the Farm" (in person), $25 members, $40 nonmembers.

• June 9: "Touring With the Cats" (in person), $45 members, $60 nonmembers.

• June 10: "What is Courage" (in person), $29 members, $44 nonmembers.

Writers' Colony

The Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow is offering a fellowship for writers of children's or young adult literature. Candidates should be working on a picture book or chapter book that provides inspiration and hope for those struggling with the hardships and challenges that life often metes out. The successful application will demonstrate insight, honesty, literary merit and the likelihood of publication.

The fellowship winner will receive a two-week residency to allow the recipient to focus completely on their work.

Fellowship applications must be accompanied by a writing sample and a nonrefundable $35 application fee. Writers proposing more than one project must submit a separate application and fee for each one. Deadline is midnight July 26. The winner will be announced no later than Aug. 13. Residency must be completed by Dec. 31, 2022.

Downtown Alliance

The Downtown Springdale Alliance is hosting its annual Street Dinner June 5 on Emma Avenue in downtown Springdale. This is the fifth year that the Downtown Springdale Alliance has hosted this event, which serves as the nonprofit's biggest fundraiser of the year and is sponsored by Milestone Construction Company.

The Street Dinner will take place on Emma Avenue between Spring Street and Main Street – right in the heart of downtown Springdale. Guests can expect a four-course meal prepared by Chef Brent Hale of Big Sexy Food and Fancy Pants Catering. Two dinner seatings will be offered, at 5 and 7 p.m. Tables will be spread out for social distancing. A live concert featuring La Fiesta will start at 9 p.m. in Walter Turnbow Park.

Dinner tickets are $75. Guests can purchase dinner and two drink tickets for $85. The 7 p.m. seating is sold out. Tickets for the 5 p.m. seating are still available.

All proceeds go to programming that builds a vibrant and thriving downtown Springdale.
