National Guard

Army National Guardsmen from Battery B, 1st Battalion of the 142nd Field Artillery unit, left Springdale on the day after Thanksgiving in 1990 for duty in Operation Desert Storm.

They returned to Springdale 30 years ago this week, and a rededication ceremony for a plaque honoring the troop is planned for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 22 in Springdale's Memorial Park. The park is located on Mill Street, one block north of Emma Avenue.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the unit erected the plaque in 1991 with the names of the 88 soldiers in the unit. The plaque was displayed on a rock monument outside of the Springdale National Guard Armory, where the unit was posted, but was misplaced when the Springdale armory was among 200 in the nation closed at the recommendation of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission.

Former Sgt. Richard Bowman, a cook for Battery B, found the plaque.

"I chased it down," Bowman said. "They had to take it down when the state took over the armory. Somebody had stored it in a closet."

Bowman said several members of the unit, which manned and supported four Howitzer guns at stations in Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, get together once a month.

He hopes to get the plaque on display by the fall. He's involved in planning an event on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to mark the anniversary.
