Hogs' Reeder wins Auburn tourney

FAYETTEVILLE -- University of Arkansas golfer Tyson Reeder already has made his bonus senior season one worth remembering.

The graduate senior from Edmond, Okla., birdied his final hole Wednesday morning to earn co-medalist honors at the Tiger Invitational in Opelika, Ala.

Reeder shared the victory with Georgia's Davis Thompson at 10-under par at the weather-affected 54-hole event at the Grand National Lake Course, the home tract of Auburn.

The left-hander had just three holes to play Wednesday to complete his third round. Reeder parred the par-5 4th hole, fell a stroke behind with a bogey on No. 5, then posted the critical birdie on the par-4 6th hole.

"I knew I was playing well, so I just made the commitment to keep trusting my game," Reeder said. "I knew if I parred the last three holes I would give myself a chance to win the tournament.

"I bogeyed my second hole, and I knew I had to make a birdie on the last. I just kept trusting myself and I ended up hitting it to 3 feet and rolled in the 3-footer. It's a great feeling knowing the hard work has paid off."

Reeder became the 13th known UA men's golfer to win multiple events.

"Tyson has improved each year and continues to trend in the right direction," Arkansas Coach Brad McMakin said. "He puts in extremely hard work and I couldn't be prouder of this huge accomplishment."

Host Auburn won the invitational with a score of 26-under par, followed by Alabama (-24), LSU (-13), Vanderbilt (-13) and South Carolina (-11) as SEC teams dominated the top of the leaderboard.

Arkansas carded a final round 4-under par to finish in seventh place at -10, one stroke behind Georgia.

Razorbacks junior Julian Perico tied for 13th at 4 under. Seniors Mason Overstreet and William Buhl both shot 4 over to tie for 46th, and junior Segundo Oliva Pinto was at 5 over to tie for 56th. Arkansas freshman Manuel Lozada, playing as an individual, carded a 15 over and tied for 83rd.

BASKETBALL

UALR guard leaving program

Former University of Arkansas at Little Rock guard Markquis Nowell has entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports.

Nowell averaged 14.3 points per game in 2020-21 before cutting his junior season short, opting out and leaving the UALR program in early February. He was an all-Sun Belt first-team honoree in 2019-20 when he scored 17.2 points per game as the Trojans earned a regular-season conference title. Nowell concluded his three-year UALR career averaging 16.3 points and five assists in 68 games.

The 5-7 guard from Harlem, N.Y., was suspended for the opening two games of the Trojans' Sun Belt schedule on Jan. 1 and 2 for undisclosed disciplinary reasons. He returned in a bench role and reached double figures in five of his eight games as a reserve before leaving the program after a Feb. 6 loss at Texas State.

Martin enters transfer portal

Arkansas State women's basketball forward Peyton Martin has entered the transfer portal, the program confirmed Wednesday. The 5-11 forward from Pine Bluff maintains one year of NCAA eligibility.

Martin started 15 games last season and finished as the Red Wolves' second-leading scorer with 11.2 points per game on 45.5% shooting with 6.3 rebounds per game. Martin leaves the Red Wolves as one of 16 players in program history to reached 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in her career.

Her departure leaves ASU with only eight players on its roster. The Red Wolves' Class of 2021 features at least six newcomers, including Lauryn Pendleton (Little Rock Central).

Also Wednesday it was confirmed that senior Morgan Wallace is set to make use of her extra year of eligibility and return to ASU for one more season. The 5-10 guard from Pulaski Academy led the Red Wolves in rebounding for a second consecutive season with 7.3 per game.
