A cycling organization has ranked Fayetteville sixth nationally for its bike friendly businesses.

The League of American Bicyclists has awarded its Bicycle Friendly Award to 30 businesses in the city, according to a city news release. Only five other U.S. cities had more businesses receive awards.

The top five cities on this year's list include Tampa, Fla., Fort Collins, Co., Arlington, Va., St. Petersburg, Fla., and Boise, Id.

Fayetteville was given a Silver designation on the league's list of U.S. cities while the city's Sustainability Department received a Platinum designation.

"As one of the largest employers in our community, it is extremely important that the City of Fayetteville encourages our employees to use sustainable healthy transportation, such as bicycling," said Dane Eifling, mobility coordinator for the city's Engineering Division. "More people bicycling to work means fewer cars on the roads and a healthier work force to serve our city."
