PREP WRESTLING: Bentonville High repeats as 6A-West Conference champions

BENTONVILLE -- Bentonville High trounced the competition to repeat as 6A-West Conference boys wrestling champions Saturday at Tiger Arena.

Backed by winning six of the 14 weight classes, Bentonville rolled up 210 points to easily outdistance second-place Rogers Heritage's 149.

"Overall, I think it went very well," Bentonville coach Jason Adams. "Our guys are finally getting back there, getting all of our guys back into the lineup. We just have to kind of keep moving forward. Things are starting to gel if we can all stay healthy and keep working."

Heritage was the only other school to earn more than one division win (three).

Adams was somewhat dismissive of the team point total, mostly because of other team's health concerns.

"A lot of teams are feeling the pandemic," Adams said. "A lot of teams have guys missing. So the team score can be kind of skewed right now just because there's a lot of good wrestlers not here today."

Of the five Tigers wrestlers who took home titles, one was senior Raphael Marascio, who claimed the 145-pound title defeating of Rogers High's Deven Speer by technical fall in the third period.

Marascio, who goes to the state tournament with a 24-0 record this season, was voted outstanding wrestler for the lower divisions.

"It feels pretty good," Marascio said. "I know it was a lot of hard work coming into this. I know that our team put in a lot of effort. I'm not only proud of myself, but proud of the team. It was a big deal. (It's my) last year, I've got to give it everything."

The boys Class 4A, 5A and 6A state tournaments are slated for February 19-20 at the Stephens Center in Little Rock.
