Arsenal set to destroy old items

The Pine Bluff Arsenal has announced plans to destroy old production items and hold controlled forestry burns.

Residents living close to the arsenal should not be alarmed if they hear small explosions or see smoke coming from the installation on Monday.

Personnel from the Little Rock Air Force Base Explosive Ordnance Detachment will be destroying obsolete production items during the morning, according to a news release.

Also, the Arkansas Forestry Commission will conduct multiple prescribed and controlled burns at the Arsenal beginning this month, depending on the weather. The community shouldn't be alarmed if they see large plumes of smoke coming from the arsenal during this time, according the release.

These burns serve as an environmental benefit, not only to reduce wildfire risk by removing fuel levels and loading from the forest floor but also to act as timber stand and provide wildlife habitat improvements.

The planning of controlled burns includes safety plans, smoke management plans and fire intensity levels to include flame heights and flame speeds. All controlled burns will be conducted by specially-trained and equipped crews skilled at fire management operations, according to the release.
