FORT SMITH -- The city Utility Department has announced the opening of a new way for customers to pay bills.

A utility payment drive-thru will open at 517 Rogers Ave. behind Tip Top Western Wear today, according to a news release. This will allow people to pay their city utility bill in person without having to also pay for metered parking or enter City Hall, with it facilitating social distancing between customers and staff.

"The city leased the drive-through for temporary use due to the covid-19 pandemic," the release said. "Based on utilization and public feedback throughout 2021, the drive-through has the potential to become a long-term service offered to customers."

City directors approved the lease for a drive-thru for utility bill payments during its July 7 meeting. The board approved repairs and upgrades necessary to make it operational Sept. 15. The department has been working to open the service to the public in the time since.
