Student talks architecture

Lance Hargraves, a ninth grade student at Dermott High School, participated in the Arkansas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Virtual Discussion on Architecture.

Kwendeche, a licensed architect and AIA member, convened the virtual discussion Oct. 29, according to a news release.

Hargraves previously attended an Architecture + Design summer camp where Kwendeche was an instructor for the Alex Foundation at Eudora and Lake Village.

Kwendeche discussed buildings and structures that featured Rosenwald-funded schools. The Rosenwald Fund at one time was a major philanthropic effort to improve educational opportunities for African Americans.

During the discussion, Hargraves shared that Morris Booker Memorial College at Dermott is a Rosenwald school.

"Morris Booker Memorial College is a single-story building built in 1929. The design incorporated an industrial room, in which trades could be taught. The building was sited, according to Rosenwald's recommendations, for the best use of natural lighting. The building served as a public-school facility until 1975 and has since been listed on the National Register of Historic Places," according to the release.
