The full moon in Gemini is about the sharing of our ideas and ourselves and connecting in whatever way we can. The lunar eclipse, subtle and visible to the experienced observer, has outsized mystical implications — the shadow of missed connections that provide a contrast. We'll know when we're getting it wrong or right.
LUNAR-ECLIPSE SHENANIGANS
It has happened throughout history that clever people have used their knowledge of a lunar eclipse to trick their enemies, prove their own power or gain advantage in battle. In antiquity, Greek witches claimed the ability to extinguish the light of the moon. Christopher Columbus used this trick on the natives of the Americas, threatening that his god would take away the moon if they didn't start behaving to his satisfaction. There have been several fictional variations on the theme as well, including a plot twist in Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court."
It is easy to see why lunar and solar eclipses would be the source of many an ominous ancient forecast — a dragon eating the sun, a turtle god — a warning that what's given can always be taken away. It's the cosmic version of object constancy, a heavenly game of peekaboo that humans had to learn didn't mean the end of everything. May we take the omen as an opportunity to stay aware of the contrast of light and dark, of gifts and loss, so that we may be more grateful for the constants of life that might normally be easy to take for granted.
