Crash fatal to man; driver dies in pond

A Russellville man was killed early Tuesday in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Pope County, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Stephen R. Sadler, 63, was heading east at 4:37 a.m. when he ran off the highway near the 79-mile marker near London, the report said. The vehicle, the make and model of which were not included in the report, traveled down the ditch until overturning twice and Sadler was thrown out, according to the report.

Weather and road conditions at the time of the crash were rainy and wet, the report said.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m., dispatchers received a call from a woman in the 300 block of Herrmann Trail who said she saw a vehicle with a passenger inside submerged in the pond near her home, a sheriff's office news release states.

Two people removed the woman from the vehicle and administered CPR, authorities said. Deputies, emergency workers from the Fountain Lake Fire Department and LifeNet personnel went to the scene, but were unable to revive the woman, whose name wasn't immediately released.

"We believe the fatality was accidental," Garland County Sheriff Mike McCormick told The Sentinel-Record on Tuesday.

Information about how the vehicle went into the pond wasn't immediately available.
