NWA EDITORIAL: Changing hands

As we've heard a lot lately, there's only one president at a time. Twitter, thankfully, understands that.

The social media company said last week that Twitter accounts such as @POTUS, @whitehouse, @VP and @FLOTUS (first lady of the United States) will automatically transfer to the control of the new administration once President-elect Joe Biden takes the oath of office on Jan. 20.

It doesn't matter whether Donald Trump has conceded or whether he objects. The Twitter accounts aren't his.

Twitter, to its credit, works closely with the National Archives and Records Administration to transition White House-related accounts from one administration to the other. The company archives all the existing tweets related to the accounts and reset the accounts to zero tweets, giving the new administration a clean slate from which to engage Twitter users.

But, don't worry, Northwest Arkansas Trump fans. Most of Donald Trump's tweeting has come through his personal account, @realDonaldTrump, which had 88.9 million followers as of Friday. That account will follow Trump wherever he goes upon his departure from the White House. He'll be able to continue his tweeting without interruption, although it might be nice if he takes a bit of a break. Unlikely.

The way things are going, his tweets may be all we see from him on Inauguration Day.
