What is your favorite room? Our living room

Why? It's the center of the action in our home. During normal times, it's where our friends and family gather. My husband, Jason, and I have an 11-year-old and 14-year-old and are constantly entertaining kids, teens, friends and family. That might mean a slumber party, a Girl Scout meeting, a few friends over for a glass of wine or an all-out karaoke party in our living room (yes, that is true).

It can also be a very calming room. Our home is like a city version of a treehouse because it's a contemporary style built in the '60s with tons of floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto our deck and into the woods behind the house. When you sit on our sofa, you are looking right into the tops of the trees, which is beautiful during all four seasons. I especially love Christmas in this room when the tree is in the corner, all the decorations are out and the fireplace is ablaze.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: I'd replace the rug and our chairs, as the past five years with young kids, two dogs and many social gatherings have done a number on them. But I'm holding out until there are fewer people here to stain them.
