Arkansas runners, coaches honored by SEC

The University of Arkansas men's and women's indoor track and field teams earned the SEC's runner and coach of the year awards Wednesday.

On the men's side, Cameron Griffith was named the conference's runner of the year and Chris Bucknam picked up coach of the year honors.

Katie Izzo won the SEC's women's runner of the year award, while Lance Harter was selected as coach of the year.

Griffith won the SEC indoor 3,000-meter title for a third time this past season. Bucknam was named coach of the year for the ninth time with the indoor team.

Izzo won the 3,000- and 5,000-meter titles at the SEC indoor championships. Harter earned his 11th indoor coach of the year award.

BASEBALL

UAPB loses at home

The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (6-12) managed six hits and had two errors in a 9-2 loss to Eastern Illinois (8-6) on Wednesday at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex in Pine Bluff.

The Golden Lions took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Kacy Higgins hit a leadoff triple and scored on Brandon Simon's ground out to second base. The Panthers took control of the game with a six-run fourth inning, with three runs being unearned thanks to errors by Brady Moorman and Higgins.

Braelin Hence and Andrew Szalkowski had two hits each to lead UAPB offensively. Bryce Roesch took the loss after allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits over 42/3 innings with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.

GOLF

Golden Lions finish fifth

The UAPB men's golf team finished fifth in the nine-team Tennessee-Martin Tournament at Jackson (Tenn.) Country Club on Wednesday.

The Golden Lions posted a final-round score of 315 to finish with a 914. Tennessee-Martin won the tournament at 877.

Tristan Maharaj finished in a tie for 12th with a 223, one shot ahead of teammate Niklas Frimodig's 224. Grayson Martin and Joshua McCray each shot a 236, while Justin Lee finished with a 247.
