CLASS 3A

Mountain View sails after strong 1st quarter

CHARLESTON -- Wednesday's start was everything for Mountain View.

Mountain View turned a big first quarter into a 56-43 victory against Helena-West Helena in a first-round matchup at the Class 3A state tournament at the Tiger Center.

"My assistant talked about getting them early and getting them off balance in the early going," Mountain View Coach Casey Scribner said. "That was the cushion we needed throughout the game. The first quarter ended up being the final margin of victory."

Mountain View, the defending Class 3A state champion, jumped to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter, its biggest lead of the first half

Helena-West Helena (23-6) cut into the lead, as Mountain View held a 33-25 edge at halftime.

Mountain View (25-5) used a 14-2 run to open the third quarter to push its lead to 47-27, and the Lady Yellowjackets didn't look back after.

"It was a game of runs for us," Scribner said. "We are not very deep, so we only press in spots of the game. We can't do it the whole game. We did it enough to get us a win."

Josie Storey, who finished with a game-high 20 points, paced Mountain View in the third quarter, scoring the final eight points.

Aubrey Isbell and Chaelann Vickers each finished with 11 points for the Lady Yellowjackets.

Helena-West Helena was guided by Katelyn Donaldson's team-high 18 points. Tara Green finished with 15 points for the Lady Cougars.

"I'm extremely proud of these young ladies," Helena-West Helena Coach Kevin Pringle said. "They were able to make it to the state tournament, and a lot of teams didn't make it here. I told them they could've easily hung their heads and let the game get out of hand. They kept fighting."

Pringle said he and his team expected the scoring runs from Mountain View.

"We knew they were a high-powered offensive team," Pringle said. "We didn't rotate quick enough sometimes. We shot ourselves in the foot at times."

ROSE BUD 54, ASHDOWN 39

Rose Bud saved its best offensive quarter for last to pull away in a first-round state tournament matchup.

Rose Bud (20-11) closed out the game with a 24-point fourth quarter. Rose Bud made 4 of 5 from the field and 16 of 22 from the line to fuel the victory.

Kyndal Rooks scored a game-high 19 points for Rose Bud. Sarah Hartle added 12 points, while Hope Hartle chipped in 11.

Ashdown (17-13) was guided by Porsha Randle and Jukarra Greenlee with 12 points apiece. Aleya Hill had 11 points for the Lady Panthers.

It was a slow start for both offenses with Rose Bud taking a 7-5 lead after the first quarter. Rose Bud led 22-15 at the break.

The Lady Ramblers scored the last six points of the third quarter to take a 30-21 edge entering the final quarter.

Charleston 50, Centerpoint 29

Gracie Koch scored all of her 15 points in the second half as host Charleston went on a 20-3 run to pull away from Centerpoint.

Charleston (29-3) used back-to-back buckets by Payton Rucker and Rylee Ross to take a 19-15 halftime lead, then the Lady Tigers opened the second half with 16 unanswered points. Rucker, Raegan Oldridge and Brooklyn Groen each hit a three-pointer during the run, and Charleston took a 39-18 cushion into the fourth quarter.

Rucker added 13 points for the Lady Tigers. Marlee Bright had 10 points, all in the second half, to lead Centerpoint (23-8).
