Architect

to speak

Brandon Clifford will present a lecture at 4 p.m. Jan. 27 in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall on the University of Arkansas campus, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design Lecture Series.

Clifford is the director and co-founder of Matter Design, an interdisciplinary design lab in Boston. He is also an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Planning in Cambridge.

He is the John G. Williams Distinguished Visiting Professor in Architecture this semester in the Fay Jones School.

In his lecture, "Material and Myths," Clifford will discuss the mystery and speculation surrounding the megalithic constructions of the past. Behind these mysteries are alternative ways of thinking that compound cultural significance, ceremony and mythology with technical and methodological procedures that have the potential to resolve contemporary problems.

Blood center

seeks donors

Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, the area's exclusive provider of blood and plasma products to patients at more than 40 area hospitals, is experiencing a shortage of type O Negative red cells and AB Plasma. Donations are needed immediately to ensure that adequate reserve levels are maintained.

During the month of January, donors at all CBCO blood drives will receive a maroon long-sleeved shirt. At February drives, donors will receive a blue T-shirt with a motivational message.

On average, a transfusion takes place every seven minutes, and around 200 donations are needed each day to meet the area's blood needs. Give blood at the following drives:

•Green Forest: 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 27, Green Forest High School, 800 Phillips Ave.

•Siloam Springs: Noon-6 p.m. Jan. 27, John Brown University, 2000 W. University Ave.

The Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow is celebrating 20 years in 2020 with new programming, including informative workshops instructed by accomplished, experienced instructors and open to writers and prospective writers of all levels.

These workshops are great opportunities to develop a wide range of writing skills without a significant investment of time and money. This year's workshops include such topics as playwriting, memoir writing, humor writing, science and storytelling, screenplay writing, how to structure a novel, creating art alongside writing and guidance in publishing your work.

Rodeo has

new leader

Joe Rollins has been elected president of the Rodeo of the Ozarks.

Rollins has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Rodeo of the Ozarks since 2013. He worked for Springdale Public Schools from 2004 to 2018, serving as principal of the Don Tyson School of Innovation for four years before being named Springdale School District's director of support services. In October 2018, Rollins accepted a new role as workforce development director for the Northwest Arkansas Council.

At elections held in November, term renewals were approved for Jimmy Bowen, Joe Rollins, Drew Weir and Kevin Riggins.

The Rodeo of the Ozarks Board of Directors for 2020 is made up of Joe Rollins, president; Sach Oliver, vice president; Jimmy Bowen, secretary; Steve Smith, treasurer; Drew Weir, David Hoffarth, Dale Daniels, Pat Hutter, Kevin Riggins and John Gladden.

The 76th annual Rodeo of the Ozarks will run June 24-27. Tickets will go on sale in May.

Clay Studio

sets classes

Besides the regular classes, children's hand-building pottery classes are being offered in February at the Clay Studio at Wishing Springs in Bella Vista.

These classes are for children ages 7 and older, and the cost is $80 plus supplies, glazes and firings included. The classes are on the four Saturdays of February.

The regular adult classes for the month of February are Mondays: hand-build, 2-5 p.m., and wheel, 6-9 p.m.; Thursdays: hand-build and wheel, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Kingsbury

to speak

Alex Kingsbury, a noted journalist and member of the editorial board of the The New York Times, will give a talk entitled "Opinion Journalism in the Age of Trump." The talk will take place at 6 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual History, 1 East Center St. in Fayetteville. Co-sponsored by the Pryor Center and the Northwest Arkansas Chapter for the Society of Professional Journalists, Mr. Kingsbury's talk will last 45 minutes, followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer session.

Blood drive

The City of Rogers is hosting a Battle of the Badges Blood Drive, in partnership with American Red Cross, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 3 at Rogers City Hall, 301 West Chestnut.

Locals and visitors are encouraged to join our lifesaving mission as the Rogers Fire Department and Police Department will be competing to see who can recruit the most blood drive participants.

Each participating donor will be asked prior to donating blood which of the two departments he or she would like to support in the competition.
