Voters OK extending Greenland school tax

FAYETTEVILLE -- Voters approved a plan Tuesday to extend the time the Greenland School District can collect part of its tax levy.

The final, unofficial vote total in the special election was 129, or 86.6%, for the ballot question and 20, or 13.4%, against, according to election results.

The tax rate of 39.5 mills stayed the same, according to the Washington County special election notice.

The School District allots revenue from 14.5 mills to debt service and revenue from the remaining 25 mills for maintenance and operations.

The district sought permission to extend the time it collects the 14.5 mills to finance $2.7 million in bonds. The bonds will mature over 30 years. Part of the proceeds will be used to pay the district's outstanding bond debt.

The rest of the revenue will help pay for a new administration building; renovate the elementary school, Dee Lee Gym and Old Wilson Gym; and build, refurbish and remodel other school buildings.
