ASU Heritage Sites gets new director

Arkansas Heritage Sites at Arkansas State University has a new director.

Adam Long, who served the past eight years as director of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott, started the job in mid-January, according to a university news release. He’ll earn $90,000 annually.

The Heritage Sites Office “develops and operates historic properties of regional and national significance in the Arkansas Delta,” according to the release. The sites are educational resources, as well as tourist destinations, and serve as “living laboratories” for Heritage Studies Ph.D. students.

The heritage sites are the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center (where Ernest Hemingway spent time writing); the Historic Dyess Colony: Johnny Cash Boyhood Home; Lakeport Plantation; Southern Tenant Farmers Museum; Rohwer Japanese American Relocation Center; and Historic V.C. Kays House on ASU’s campus, according to the university.

Long, 35, has literature degrees from Lyon College, the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and the University of Kansas. He graduated from Jonesboro High School in 2002.

SAU opens public golf driving range

Southern Arkansas University has taken on a new community venture: A golf driving range open to the public.

It’s the only driving range in Magnolia that’s open to people who aren’t members of golf clubs, according to a university news release.

Most college campuses don’t have driving ranges or golf courses. Historically, according to media reports, those that built golf courses did so to generate revenue for the campus.

It was unclear by late Friday how much SAU spent on the driving range, which is an area to practice golf swings, rather than a full-fledged course.

In the news release, SAU Director of Athletics Steve Browning noted the role that golf plays in professional networking.

The university’s golf teams also plan to use the driving range, but the public can rent buckets of 50 or 70 balls for $5 or $6, respectively.

The range is open from dawn until dusk, the release states.
