FAYETTEVILLE -- Police say a 21-year-old man was shot Thursday night during what appears to be "a drug deal gone wrong."

Sgt. Anthony Murphy, police spokesman, said police received a call about 11:30 p.m. from Washington Regional Medical Center reporting a man with a gunshot wound was being treated. Police didn't release the man's name.

Detectives were told the shooting happened in the parking lot of the Cornerstone Apartments, 1341 N. Futrall Drive, Murphy said.

The initial investigation indicates the man was shot during "an illicit marijuana transaction," Murphy said.

The investigation is ongoing.
