PINE BLUFF -- The Democratic county convention here today declared Lytleton F. Sallee the nominee for county clerk. The nominee is the son of the late L. T. Sallee, who was elected county clerk two years ago and who fell dead at Dexter, this county, August 2 just after he had finished an address in behalf of his candidacy for renomination, although he was without opposition. Following his death, Governor Brough appointed Lytleton F. Sallee to fill out his father's term and the young man is assured of the office for the next two years.

CONWAY -- The University of Central Arkansas has spent more than $120,000 to renovate a modest house behind the president's UCA owned home so that it can serve as a guesthouse for campus visitors. UCA President Allen C. Meadors said the home "will be used to house guest speakers, national and international scholars and leaders, lecturers as well as others that visit UCA." UCA has spent a total of $121,190.47 on renovations and furnishings for the one story home at 1951 South Blvd., spokesman Venita Jenkins said. The Faulkner County tax assessor's office valued the house at $121,253 as of 2008, the latest figure available. The extent of the renovations at the 2,200-square foot home has some campus leaders questioning spending priorities. "It does get kind of hard to swallow when we're sitting on our heels waiting for raises and we have very little travel money," yet money is being spent on decorative sidewalks and a guesthouse renovation, faculty senate President Lynn Burley said recently.
