3:14 P.M. UPDATE: The number of cases of covid-19 in Arkansas topped 700 on Friday, and no new deaths were reported, leaving the toll at 12.

Of the total 704 cases, 20 are children, 487 are adults under 65 and 197 are adults 65 and older, Health Secretary Nate Smith said. Healthcare workers account for 96 cases.

There were 71 patients hospitalized with the virus as of Friday, Smith said, and 26 were on ventilators.

So far, 60 people have recovered from the virus, Smith said.

For the first time, Smith offered statistics Friday on how many hospitalized and ICU patients have certain underlying conditions.

While only 8.5% of covid-19 patients in Arkansas are known to have diabetes, of patients who have been hospitalized with the illness, 30% have diabetes. Of those who have needed to be in the intensive care unit for covid-19 treatment, 38% had diabetes.

Figures were similar for heart disease. Only 7.7% of all covid-19 patients have heart disease, but of hospitalized patients, 23% have heart disease. Of ICU patients, 27% have heart disease.

For lung disease, Smith said only 4.4% of all covid-19 patients have it, while 14% of hospitalized patients and 16% of ICU patients have lung disease.

About 2.1% of all covid-19 patients have kidney disease, Smith said, but 8% of hospitalized covid-19 patients and 11% of ICU patients have kidney disease.

Smith said because people with underlying conditions are so at-risk for severe illness with covid-19, those Arkansans need to make sure they’re taking extra precautions and managing their health.
