NWA Letters to the Editor

Thankful for journalists working to deliver facts

Thanks to your ever-courageous reporters and photographers for continuing their reports and images that are informing all of us how to live in these rather dangerous times of covid-19. I see new bylines and bylines from Northwest Arkansas that are now reporting across the state, doing what must be done to keep their readers up-to-date. We are assured of fact-based information, not "gut" feelings, from your reports.

Please keep your hands washed, keep your distance and keep editing, writing and photographing our new world. Thanks to you all!

State should postpone

tax cut due to virus

On Jan. 3, the governor released a statement touting the individual income tax cuts on high income Arkansans. This tax cut was to reduce state revenue by $100 million to $150 million per year.

On March 23, the Arkansas Department of of Finance and Administration informed the governor and the Legislative Council that the Arkansas 2020 budget forecast of revenue will be revised downward by $353.1 million. This will leave a 4.3% shortfall in income available to the state for this fiscal year.

State expenses probably should rise rather than fall during the viral epidemic to support endangered rural hospitals and to cover Medicaid claims which will also probably rise.

Now would be a good time to postpone the effective date of the income tax cut to 2024. While this will not plug the hole in the 2020 budget, it will make next year's budget process less painful.

What about questions

they ask on the census?

Why is it OK for the Census to ask if I am Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish but it is not OK to ask if I am a U.S. citizen? I am proud to be a U.S. citizen and I filled out the census online form the same day I received the notice and I did answer that I am not Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish, but nowhere on the form could I say that I was proud to be a U.S. citizen.

And after filling out the form and confirming that I am not Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish, the government then sent me another census notice that said "Su respuesta es requerida por ley." What part of not Hispanic can't they understand?

And this is the same government that Bernie wants to put in total charge of my health care? I think not!
