Clowney seeks second House term

FAYETTEVILLE -- State Rep. Nicole Clowney, D-Fayetteville, will run for a second term, she said Thursday.

Clowney, 37, holds the District 86 seat. She faced no Republican opposition in 2018, her first bid for public office, after winning a Democratic primary. She had no announced opposition as of Friday.

District 86 covers much of Fayetteville, extending as far west as Adams Road. It includes most of the city that is west of College Avenue. The boundary extends east of College in the southeast, going to Mission Boulevard.

Clowney is a founding member of the Northwest Arkansas chapter of Moms Demand Action, which seeks to reduce gun violence. She teaches classical studies at the University of Arkansas.

The representative is a graduate of Yale Law School, and practiced law in Kentucky, according to her announcement. Clowney said she worked for the Children's Law Center, a nonprofit legal service center to protect the rights of children and youth. She moved to Arkansas six years ago, but has not practiced law here.

Experience as a lawyer, teacher, advocate and parent allows her to work with and represent groups with diverse interests and backgrounds, Clowney said.

There are 24 Democrats in the 100-member state House.

Candidate filing for partisan offices begins at noon Nov. 4 and ends at noon Nov. 12. Party primaries are March 3. The general election is Nov. 3, 2020.

State House members serve two-year terms and have an annual salary of $39,400.
