• Max Sylvester, a trainee pilot in Australia who was having his first lesson behind the controls of an aircraft, safely made an emergency landing with the help of an air traffic controller after his instructor fell unconscious during the flight.

• Danny Woodcock, 66, of Caledonia, Miss., accused of embezzling funds from the union that he served as president for about 15 years, was sentenced to nearly four years in prison and ordered to pay $519,963 in restitution to the organization.

• Bradley Wantz, mayor of Taneytown, Md., said police arrested a "disgruntled resident" who was accused of intentionally ramming his car into City Hall and damaging the building after his water service had been shut off for nonpayment.

• Bon Truong of Edmonton, Alberta, waited nearly 10 months to claim his lottery winnings because, he said, he felt overwhelmed by his luck after netting a $60 million jackpot with the same numbers, representing important dates and family birthdays, that he had played for decades.

• Mytavis Alexander, 25, of St. Louis faces three child-endangerment and 11 other felony counts and is accused of firing into a vehicle containing his 3-year-old son and two other children after a custody exchange with the child's mother, whom Alexander accused of stealing from him, according to charging documents.

• Amanda Gail Oakes, 36, was sentenced to 99 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter and corpse-abuse charges in the death of her 6-month-old son, whose body was found in an Alabama motel room freezer after, authorities said, the baby died in the care of her boyfriend.

• Gail Gordon Donegan, an activist and corporate lawyer appointed by Virginia's governor to a council on women's issues, resigned from the position over past derogatory comments she made on social media, including posts mocking Catholics as pedophiles.

• Craig Capri, police chief in Daytona Beach, Fla., said a 10-year-old boy died after his 14-year-old friend accidentally shot him in the head while the children played with a semi-automatic pistol they had taken out of a drawer in a bedroom they had broken into.

• Yenier Conde, 33, accused with Sarah Conde, 29, of punishing their five children with whippings and confinement in a dark, locked bedroom in Lansing, Mich., pleaded no contest to child abuse and was sentenced to 5½ to 10 years in prison.
