Blood Center

seeks donors

Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, the provider of blood products to more than 40 area hospitals, is experiencing a critical shortage of all type O blood products. Donations are needed immediately to ensure that adequate reserve levels are maintained.

On average, a transfusion takes place every seven minutes, and around 200 donations are needed each day to meet the area's blood needs. Help by giving blood at any of the following locations:

Fayetteville: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 21, Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks, 1100 N. College Ave.

• Rogers: 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Oct. 25, Rogers Heritage High School, 1114 S. Fifth St.

Mental health

seminar set

Depression is a common problem in older adults, especially around the holidays or as the seasons change, but it shouldn't be considered a normal part of aging.

Natalie Jordan, M.D., will discuss changes in mental health in adults and triggers like seasonal affective disorder or dementia, as well as treatment options, in a free community seminar from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Shuffield Education Center at Baptist Health-Fort Smith.

Dr. Jordan is board certified in both general psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry.

During the seminar, Mandy Kuykendall, a certified therapeutic recreation specialist, will also provide ideas on how to stay active mentally and physically to combat depression and other psychiatric disorders as people age.

Medicare

Northwest Health is offering free Medicare seminars in October to help residents make informed decisions about what Medicare covers, what supplemental plans are and what Medicare Advantage plans include.

The "Welcome to Medicare" seminars are being held on three of Northwest Health's five campuses. Dates include:

Rorby

to speak

The Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow will present a reading by Writer-in-residence Ginny Rorby at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Creekside Cafe and Coffee Shop, 55 N. Main St. in Eureka Springs. Rorby will discuss her hot-off-the-presses young adult novel, Freeing Finch. This event is free, but donations towards the WCDH 2020 "Getting it Write" LGBTQ+ fellowship will be accepted.

Released just this month, Freeing Finch is an inspiring and insightful story of a transgender girl and an abandoned dog who overcome adversity to find a home, love and a sense of belonging.

Rorby is an author, advocate and activist from California, recipient of the 2015 Mendocino Arts Council Award and president of the Mendocino Coast Writers' Conference. She writes books that connect children to the natural world and received the ALA's Schneider Family Book Award for her novel, Hurt Go Happy.

Scarry

speaks

Elaine Scarry will present a lecture at 4 p.m. Oct. 28 in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design lecture series.

Scarry is the Walter M. Cabot professor of aesthetics and the general theory of value at Harvard University.

In her lecture, "Architecture and the Right of Assembly," Scarry will discuss how the right of assembly is connected to the right of free speech, as both occur together in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Scarry lectures both nationally and internationally on nuclear war, law, literature and medicine.

This is the Martha Dellinger Memorial Lecture, sponsored by Sharon and Jim Parker. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, with limited seating.

IPFD hosts

chili cook-off

The Inspiration Point Fire Department Auxiliary will be holding its annual Chili Cook-off and Silent Auction from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 2 at Inspiration Point Fire Station 1, 31 Ozark Automotive Road, 6 miles west of Eureka Springs on U.S. 62.

Watch the judging and enjoy some music beginning at 5 p.m. After winners are announced, choose a meal: bowl of chili with cornbread, chili dog or Frito pie with the fixin's, all served with iced tea and dessert for $10. Bid on many silent auction items donated by local businesses and restaurants.

Money raised from the event will go to the IPFD Auxiliary. This group was formed four years ago with the sole purpose of supporting the Inspiration Point Fire Department and helping to buy needed equipment.

Museum

seeks art

The Fort Smith Regional Art Museum will be showing a new exhibit, "Maximum Exposure: Group Photography Exhibit." The museum is currently accepting submissions for this exhibit. This call for works is free to enter.

Photographers preserve special moments in time and make them accessible to future generations. These images are a documentation of who we are and where we have been. This exhibition is to encourage and recognize professional artists in the field of photography. In addition, this exhibition aligns with the museum's mission to foster art appreciation in the community. All works in this group exhibit will be for sale and proceeds will benefit RAM and the participating artists.

There is no explicit theme, giving photographers the freedom to inspire viewers with your photography, no matter the style, subject matter or genre.

RNCIC to

host 5K

The Regional National Cemetery Improvement Corporation is holding its 11th annual Veterans Memorial 5K race beginning at 8 a.m. Nov. 9 at the Fayetteville National Cemetery, 700 S. Government Blvd.

Sponsors will provide shirts and goody bags to all runners. Awards and prizes will be presented to the top overall male and female runners and to the top three male and female runners in each age group. Entry fee is $25 early registration or $30 the day of the race. Group rates are available.

'Water' theme

for quiz night

"Water" will be the theme for a special Trivia Night at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 in observance of "Imagine A Day Without Water." The event takes place at Fossil Cove Brewing Co., 1946 N. Birch Ave., in Fayetteville and is the third year Fossil Cove and Beaver Water District have partnered on a "Water Trivia" Night and participated in the annual "Imagine A Day Without Water" campaign.

Beaver Water District and Fossil Cove have joined with many elected officials, water utilities, community leaders and businesses throughout the United States to participate in the fifth annual Imagine a Day Without Water, a nationwide day of advocacy and education about how valuable and essential water is in all aspects of life. Led by the Value of Water Campaign (thevalueofwater.org), hundreds of organizations across the country will host events aimed at raising awareness about the crucial need for investment in our nation's water infrastructure.

Turnout for Water Trivia may be greater than usual and seating is limited, so bring a chair and plan to arrive before or by 6:30 p.m. Trivia begins at 7 p.m.
