Macias raising money for LLS

Magdalena Macias recently accepted a nomination for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) 2020 Students of the Year campaign. She was nominated by a 2019 candidate to carry on the legacy of Springdale High School's commitment to saving lives. In the past year she volunteered at both Northwest Hospital and Northwest Children's Hospital and witnessed firsthand the toll that a disease can take on patients and their families. As a future physician, she wants to take action and make a change. This campaign is a step toward changing the game and finding a cure. Her team set a goal to raise $10,000.

Students of the Year is a national seven-week challenge through which high school student leaders raise funds and awareness for the fight against blood cancers. Her mission: to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Macias is asking for financial commitments that would be paid in the spring of 2020, after her campaign officially kicks off.

Presidential Awards for Excellence announce

Four Arkansas teachers were recently selected as 2019 state finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The National Science Foundation, on behalf of The White House, oversees the program that recognizes outstanding teachers who have demonstrated a commitment to professional development, innovative teaching techniques, and technology use in their classrooms.

A total of 58 Arkansas teachers were nominated, with the following educators selected as finalists in either the math or science category. Arkansas' finalists are now eligible to be considered for recognition by the national committee.

Carrie Beach, Washington Junior High School, Springdale School District, Science Finalist

Mary Hatch, Harrison Middle School, Bentonville School District, Science Finalist

Kara Lenfestey, Episcopal Collegiate School, Math Finalist

Melodie Murray, Pocahontas High School, Pocahontas School District, Math Finalist

"It is a true honor to be considered for this prestigious, national award," Arkansas Department of Education Secretary Johnny Key said. "The jobs of our future are heavily grounded in mathematics and the sciences, making exceptional math and science teachers essential to student success in today's job market. Each of these four educators serves as a role model of excellence for their students and for our state. Congratulations to each for being named a state finalist for 2019."

Each year a national committee comprised of scientists, mathematicians, and educators recommends up to 108 teachers to receive PAEMST awards in mathematics, science, and computer science. Winners are chosen from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. territories, and schools operated in the United States and overseas by the Department of Defense Education Activity. Teachers who are selected as national PAEMST awardees each receive a $10,000 award, a presidential citation, and a trip to Washington, DC, for a series of recognition events, professional development activities, and an awards ceremony.

Mitchell receives Cowboy Keeper award

Marshall Mitchell was selected by the National Day of the Cowboy organization's board of directors as one of six recipients to receive their 2019 Cowboy Keeper Award.

The presentation was made Oct. 10 by the Springdale Kiwanis group of which Mitchell is a member.

The award recognized his work with children to preserve cowboy heritage. He has performed his Cowboy Music For Kids programs for over 60,000 children in seven states, including every first-grade student in the Springdale School District for over 20 years.

He wrote stories, songs and performed a Clean Water Raingers musical program, which encouraged young people to care for the land and water.

In 2019, Mitchell was instrumental in the passage of legislation to annually recognize the fourth Saturday in July as National Day of the Cowboy in Arkansas.
