Searcy separates from W. Memphis

SEARCY -- Senior quarterback Bryce Dixon threw for four touchdowns in the first half and five overall to lead Searcy to a 54-21 victory over West Memphis on Friday night.

Dixon completed 23 of 34 passes for 334 yards with zero interceptions. He led a fast-paced offense that scored on its first three possessions of the game.

"That's a pretty typical pace for us," Searcy Coach Mark Kelley said. "We need just enough time to get lined up and in the right formation."

Dixon completed 5 of his first 8 passes for 63 yards and a touchdown on the Lions' first possession. His first half ended with 14 completions in 22 attempts for 197 yards to give Searcy (5-0, 2-0 6A-East) a 34-21 lead.

The difference in the first half came down to three West Memphis turnovers, all of which the Lions converted into touchdowns.

"You can't turn it over that many times and expect to stay in the game," said West Memphis Coach Billy Elmore, whose team fell to 2-3 and 1-1 in the 6A-East.

Searcy's offense, which included 69 yards on the ground in the first half, got the running game going in the second half behind senior Johnson Guthrie, who ended with 123 yards on 20 carries. Guthrie also scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Lions defense even got into the scoring column with Hayden Miles' 19-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first half.

West Memphis senior quarterback Owens McConnell completed 15 of 30 passes for 167 yards with 3 interceptions. West Memphis turned it over five times in the contest.
