Top blood cancer fundraisers earn titles for efforts

Local men and women competed for the title of Man or Woman of the Year by fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society over a 10-week period. Results of the competition were announced at the Grand Finale Celebration on May 3 at the DoubleTree Hotel.

Honored with titles for their fundraising efforts were Beau Baker, who raised $96,474, and Jalesa Reed, who raised $68,510. Also in the running were Amy Glover Bryant, Carl Carter Jr., Scott Romine, Norman Swope, Adriana Vidals and Donna Wilson.

Vying for Student of the Year were Jada Pope, Jordyn Stegall and winner Ellie Bosch, who raised $10,000 and received $1,000 scholarships.

Money was raised in honor of the Boy and Girl of the year, Michael Reed and Aiza Ali, two local blood cancer survivors.

Legacy Leadership Awards were given to oncology nurse April Dumond and Dr. Muthu Veeraputhiran, director of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Bone Marrow Transplant Program.

Chairmen of the Grand Finale were Gretchen and Doug Leech. A total of $304,145 was raised.
