BEATING THE RAIN

Not a washout

When rain falls, Our House finds a roof

Rain started falling about 6 p.m. May 10, after everything was already set up and ready for guests. Our House staff and volunteers sprang into action and quickly moved what was to be Dinner on the Grounds from the sprawling, soggy lawn of Terry Mansion into its much drier interior.

The rain had mostly stopped by the time guests arrived, some on a shuttle from the Arkansas Arts Center parking lot and most with umbrellas in hand, to raise money for Our House, which helps the homeless and working poor.

Petit and Keet quickly moved serving tables to a tent outside, and the band Lagniappe kept things lively inside. Artist Lyuba Bogan provided caricatures on demand.

A wave of purple balloons by Just Peachy bloomed from a tree by the walkway to the front of the mansion, welcoming guests as they arrived and bidding them farewell as they left.
