CARDINALS 3, TRAVELERS 1
Shortstop Donnie Walton went 2 for 4 Tuesday, including a leadoff home run in the sixth inning on the first pitch he saw, but the Arkansas Travelers fell to the Springfield Cardinals 3-1 in front of 3,792 at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by first baseman Chris Chinea, then used a two-out rally in the fifth inning to increase the lead. Second baseman Irving Lopez hit a bunt single and scored when left fielder Justin Williams hit his first home run of the season to right-center field on the first pitch he saw from Travs starter Nabil Crismatt.
Walton was the only player with multiple hits for the Travs, who finished with seven as a team. Center fielder Dylan Carlson and third baseman Evan Mendoza both went 2 for 4 to lead the Cardinals, who finished with eight hits. Each team left five runners on base.
Crismatt (1-2) took the loss after allowing 3 Springfield runs -- all earned -- with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts in 5 innings. Right-hander Reggie McClain pitched 2 innings of relief with 2 strikeouts, and righty Wyatt Mills pitched a scoreless and hitless ninth inning.
Springfield starter Austin Warner (2-2) got the victory after allowing Walton's home run with 1 walk and 10 strikeouts in 7 innings of work. Right-hander Junior Fernandez got his first save after getting four strikeouts in two innings.
