HARRISON, March 19 -- Garrett Greer was shot to death by Shan Lee, his cousin, yesterday afternoon on the farm of Lee's father near Elwood, nine miles south of Harrison. Lee was brought to jail here by Sheriff Johnson. Bad feeling had existed between the men for some time over a land matter. Lee lived on the Newton county side and Greer over the line in Boone county. Garrett Greer and his nephew, Alfred Greer, came along the road by the Lee farm, where Lee was plowing. Lee drew his pistol and fired on Greer, inflicting several wounds in his body. Greer walked some distance before falling, but died before medical aid could be obtained.

• The Arkansas Forestry Commission reported Wednesday that 51 forest fires were burning in Arkansas and asked that residents refrain from outdoor burning until there is a rain. Virgil Coffman of the Commission said that the 51 fires still going Wednesday afternoon covered 2,820 acres. ... There has been a gradual buildup of fires since Sunday, with most of the fires either caused by carelessness or by intentional wood burners, Coffman said. The hardest hit areas are the Salem area, where 12 fires were burning on 1,500 acres, the Harrison area, where six fires were burning on 300 acres, and the Ozark area, where six fires were burning on 250 acres.

• A man who robbed a Southwest Little Rock liquor store fled through a volley of gunfire from the store clerk and an employee of a nearby saloon. Gerald Styers, a store clerk, told police a man entered Big Daddy's Liquor at Mann Road and Terrace Place about 10 p.m. Friday. Police said the man left the store to get his identification. When he returned, he fired a shot from a handgun into the store ceiling, Styers said. Styers told police the man took money from the store register and fired several shots on his way out of the building. Styers told police he fired a revolver at the man as he left the store. Police said John Ford, an employee of Hooligan's -- a bar next door to Big Daddy's Liquor -- heard shots and stepped outside. Ford told police he also shot at the suspect with a revolver. Police said they don't know if the suspect was wounded.

• A twice-convicted killer, already serving a 103-year prison sentence, earned his third murder conviction Thursday for killing a North Little Rock man who prosecutors believe had witnessed an armed robbery. Pulaski County jurors deliberated about four hours to end Melvin Lee Lockhart III's three-day capital-murder and theft trial with a guilty verdict. Lockhart was accused of shooting 49-year-old David Edward Jones in November 2007, stealing his car and leaving his body in a parking lot at an industrial park near the Little Rock airport. "David Jones saw the robbery and shooting," deputy prosecutor Leigh Patterson said. "Melvin Lockhart is not the kind of guy who leaves witnesses." Benjamin Blunt identified Lockhart as the man who fired a .45-caliber pistol while robbing him and Leon Newton. The men said Lockhart fled in a car that matched the description of Jones' gold 2000 Mercury Marquis several hours before Jones was found shot to death.
