Simmons Bank has named Michael Powell mortgage division president. Powell will oversee all aspects of Simmons' mortgage process. He has worked at Centennial Bank, IberiaBank and Cornerstone Mortgage, which he started.

FINANCIAL PLANNING

Sowell Management, a privately held registered investment adviser firm that provides customized services to financial advisers, has hired Leila Shaver as chief compliance officer.

HEALTH CARE

Edwin Wallace, clinical coordinator in radiation therapy and academic adviser for health professions at Arkansas State University, will serve as president of the Arkansas Society of Radiologic Technologists. Amber Wooten, assistant professor of diagnostic medical sonography and program director at ASU, was elected vice president.

TELEVISION

Kendall Ashman, Emma Claybrook and Cole Zimmerman have been hired by Hearst Television stations KHBS/KHOG to cover Northwest Arkansas and the Arkansas River Valley. Ashman, a graduate of Michigan State University, has done on-air work for WJBK-TV in Detroit. Claybrook, a graduate of the University of Missouri, has worked at KOMU-TV in Columbia, Mo. Zimmerman, a graduate of Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, has worked at KOTO-FM radio in Telluride, Colo.

UNIVERSITIES

Jay Gandy has been appointed associate provost at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' Northwest Regional Campus, effective Aug. 1. As associate provost, Gandy will be responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to all academic programs in Northwest Arkansas. Gandy is now the interim dean of the UAMS Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, where he has worked since Dec. 31.

Russ Hannah, senior associate vice chancellor for finance/associate chief financial officer at Arkansas State University, has been elected president of the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers.

Maj. Joseph Loar has been assigned as professor of military science in the Army ROTC Program at Arkansas State University. His last assignment was operations adviser for 3rd Squadron, 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade at Fort Benning, Ga., and a deployment in southeast Afghanistan.

Chris Lorch has been promoted to vice president for academic affairs at Ozarka College. Lorch has worked for the college since 2008, as an English faculty member, division chairman for arts and humanities, and most recently as associate vice president for academics.

Mark O'Neal, who has been a trainer with the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals organizations, has been hired as head athletic trainer for the University of Arkansas men's basketball program in Fayetteville. O'Neal replaces Dave England, now director of sports medicine for the UA's athletic administration.

Zach Pena has been hired as the executive director of the Office of Institutional Advancement at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. At UAMS, he will lead the newly created institutional initiatives major gift team, which works to secure donations.
