Hunt for feral hogs via air is proposed

The Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission on Friday recommended allowing hunters with a special permit to shoot and kill feral hogs from aircraft.

Feral hogs have been a bane in Arkansas the past several years, according to farmers whose crops have been destroyed, state officials who have seen public lands trampled, and homeowners who can't keep a garden or a lawn of ornamental trees and shrubs.

Hunters must obtain a special permit for the hog hunts. Feral hog airborne eradication permits may be used only in the protection of land, water, wildlife, livestock, domestic animals, timber, human life or crops.

The proposed rule now goes to the governor's office and, if approved there, will be open to a 30-day period for public comment, said Brett Dawson, spokesman for the Arkansas Agriculture Department, the umbrella agency for the Livestock and Poultry Commission. Any change also will go to legislators. The proposed rule was recommended by the state's Feral Hog Eradication Task Force.
