Farris Honors Hall and participation in a unique interdisciplinary curriculum with ample opportunities for service learning, project-based education, collaborative work, undergraduate research, travel abroad opportunities and internship support. Students in the Schedler Honors College average approximately 1,000 cumulative hours of community service annually. Lisa Roam of Fort Smith is part of a group of students from the William H. Bowen School of Law who spent their spring break providing legal services on the road to rural communities in Arkansas by participating in Legal Aid of Arkansas's Spring Break on the Road to Justice program in March.

In partnership with students from the University of Arkansas School of Law, they provided estate-planning services to elderly residents under the supervision of Legal Aid and volunteer attorneys.

While traveling the state, the students volunteered in Flippin, Newport, Jonesboro, and Brockwell. The first day took the group to a wills clinic at Marion County Senior Activity Wellness Center, where they worked with 30 clients to produce 84 documents. Next, the students helped 24 people and drafted 73 documents in Newport and Jonesboro. On the third day, the students served 20 clients and created 50 documents in Brockwell.

Access to legal services is a problem for many Arkansans living in rural areas with low income. The Spring Break on the Road to Justice program is one of many initiatives by Legal Aid of Arkansas to address access-to-justice issues in Arkansas, which has the fewest attorneys per capita in the country with approximately one attorney for every 400 residents in the state.

More than 700 Belmont students started their summer off by participating in one of 45 faculty-led Maymester and Summer Study Abroad programs. These short-term programs, lasting anywhere from a week to a month, are led and designed by Belmont faculty to explore one or two certain areas of study, while giving students the opportunity to travel to and discover a new place.

Heather Spradlin of Bentonville studied in Belmont's England, France and Italy program. Madison Weston of Bentonville studied in Belmont's Spain program.

Belmont University Director of Study Abroad Thandi Dinani said Belmont's culturally enriching study abroad programs enhance a student's academic experience. "Classrooms come to life as faculty take students to visit places where history took place," she said. "Whether visiting Nelson Mandela's prison cell in South Africa, walking streets where Jesus walked in Israel or studying chemistry while taking a cooking class in Italy, students see how countries, concepts and cultures have shaped history and impact their world."
