SPRINGDALE -- The City Administration building was struck by lightning during a storm Friday night and Saturday morning, causing more than $40,000 in damage, Police Chief Mike Peters told the City Council on Tuesday night.

The building and his department lost use of electronic radios, computers, telephones, door locks and gates.

Peters noted the city's information technology department quickly was able to restore the Police Department to an analog radio system, on which it's still working, and phone lines.

"They worked all weekend and got the essential services working immediately," he said. "Now our door knobs work. The computer network is patched together. But we still can't open our garage door bays."

Peters said the telephones in the Human Resources Department still weren't working Tuesday night, and several computers were ruined in the city clerk's office.

The city awaits parts to repair the systems, Peters said.
