Blood Center seeks donors

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks strives for area blood reserves to be at around a three-day supply for all blood types. CBCO strongly urges blood donors to give when they can during the next few weeks.

Goodman to lecture

Cole Goodman, M.D., president and CEO of Mercy Clinic Fort Smith Communities, will visit UAFS for a lecture at noon Jan. 25, in Room 101 of the UAFS Math-Science Building at 4998 Alabama Ave.

Goodman will address faculty and students on the rapidly changing pace in the health care industry and the importance of higher education in preparing students to pursue careers in continuously advancing health care fields.

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be given in conjunction with the recruitment office of the UAMS Regional Campus in Fort Smith, which aims to address the growing need for health care professionals in rural Arkansas by identifying students who have an interest in medical careers and helping to solidify that interest.

VA to host town hall

Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks will host a town hall forum at 11 a.m. Jan. 28 at 1100 N. College Ave. in Fayetteville.

The town hall will serve as an open forum for veterans and a listening session for VHSO leadership, with the goal of ensuring veterans, their families and beneficiaries have the opportunity to be heard and have their concerns addressed by senior VA officials.

The town hall is open to the public. No registration is required, and the event is free to attend.

Tri Cycle hosts Day of Service

Tri Cycle Farms, located at 1705 N. Garland Ave. in Fayetteville, will hold its annual Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service from noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 21.

Tri Cycle Farms is seeking 75 volunteers to clean up the property and prepare gardens for this coming growing season. Tasks include, but aren't limited to, moving mulch, fixing up the hoop house, removing stakes from garden beds and much more.

The work day will begin around 3 p.m. After which, everyone will be invited to join in for "Stone Soup," a community meal that will be served at Trinity United Methodist Church's Fellowship Hall across Garland.

Volunteers should wear close-toed shoes and dress in warm layers. Volunteers should also bring a water bottle, as well as gloves or tools.

JBU to host MLK program

To honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John Brown University will host "What MLK Really Said: A Challenge to Carry on His Legacy" at 5:45 p.m. Jan. 21 in Simmons Great Hall. At the event, participants will be challenged to embody the values and revolutionary spirit King enacted over 50 years ago.

The program begins with a reading of portions of "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," a defense of the civil rights movement that Dr. King wrote in 1963. Following, assistant professor of communication Candy Gregor, along with Karla Condado, senior public relations major, and Jostin Diaz, senior engineering major, will discuss ways to individually and collectively continue King's legacy of humanitarian rights.

Before the event, a walk-through gallery of King's inspirational quotes throughout his life will be displayed all day in the Dye Conference Room.

In addition, New Heights Church pastoral staff from Fayetteville will participate in a panel discussion on how they live out King's legacy in their reconciliation efforts with the local community at 10 a.m. in the iconic Cathedral of the Ozarks.

Both events are free and open to the public.

FSRAM seeks art

The Fort Smith Regional Art Museum has issued a call for works for the year's open invitational, "The Heart of a Nation." The annual invitational is a national competitive exhibition that has been hosted by FSRAM since its inception in 1948. The purpose of this exhibition is to encourage and recognize professional artists. In addition, this exhibition aligns with the museum's mission to foster art appreciation in the community. All works will be for sale. All proceeds will benefit RAM's exhibits, educational programming and the participating artists.

Submissions can be any medium: painting, photography, fiber, sculpture, installations, video, etc. Deadline for submissions is Feb. 15.
